Using google Earth images, photos and a real live tour guide, this is a virtual tour of the remarkable story of the rise, decline and rise once more of the area known as the Isle of Dogs.
So bring a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy it!
Canary Wharf is not just about huge office buildings, it’s a lot lot more. Hear about a proud local community (who once declared their own independent country), of bustling docks filled with rum and sugar, of pirates, of executions, of the courage of digging the world‘s first under-river tunnel, of London’s first Chinese community, Chinatown, of early canal networks … most of all, it is the story of resilience.
What people have said about this tour:
“Super tour! Really enjoyed it though. The most fun lunchtime I’ve had in ages. No question. Really interesting. Love the stories about the tunnels and Pirate Kid on the gibbet for 3 months was it? And why Handel’s Water Music is always played loud. And how Brunel the Elder learned how to tunnel by watching wood worms. And ‘You do know where the Canary Islands get their name don’t you? ;). Brilliant. :)”
“Just wanted to say thank you for the tour yesterday, it was great- educational yet interesting! I didn’t know Canary wharf had such an important history. We were certainly lucky with the weather!”
“I have lived in Canary Wharf for 2 years, but learnt a lot more about the place in the 2 hours of the tour. The guide was absolutely brilliant with the history and the stories, the way he engaged the group and the impromptu fun that brought people together. Cannot wait for the next one now!”
“A truly enjoyable experience with a knowledgeable guide. The experience was full of useful historical information as well.”
